ABOUT HALF AN HOUR after I had got home that evening, my phone rang.
âKate, itâs Simon. Iâm dreadfully sorry about this, but Iâve just had a message from my office in London. They want me back. Straight away. Thereâs a meeting a nine tomorrow morning and I have to be there.â
âBut thatâs about four hours drive. When are you going?â
âIn the next twenty minutes, as soon as Iâve packed. Beth is staying, and sheâll see you in the morning, as planned. Itâs lucky that we both came in our own cars.â
I was speechless. I had begun formulating ideas about what I would say to him when we were out together the next day. In an instant, everything had evaporated into the night air.
âAre you still there, Kate?â
âYes.â
âLook, I really am sorry about this. But weâve had some fun, havenât we? Maybe we can do something again, if you come down to Maybourne. Thanks for everything. Youâre a great girl, Kate.â
And he hung up. âWeâve had some fun, havenât we?â Was that the sum total of everything that had happened over the last couple of days?
I went to my bedroom, and picked up the pillow on which Simon had laid his head. I could smell the remnants of his sweat in the hollow. I punched the pillow. I kicked it. I picked it up off the floor and threw it against the wall. I was angry that I had been wasting my time with this worthless know-it-all; he had been a real disappointment in the bedroom department, and I had sought to improve his performance. I was angry that I had placed so much hope in this man, and all that optimism had been tossed aside with a throwaway line, âhad some funâ.
At least I didnât have to visit the Maybourne seraph for an answer now. But if not Simon, then who?
There was Mike, of course. He knew how to give me a thrill. But if I was moving out of this place soon, he wouldnât be staying in my life for much longer. Perhaps Arthur had a friend that might be the kind of man I needed. Maybe a professional type who moved in all the best circles, someone who could get me out of this rut. Yes, I know, teaching is an honourable profession: Iâd never dispute that. Itâs just that I didnât want to remain as a teacher forever. I thought there were other things I could do; conceivably there might be some untapped creative talent lurking within me.
I went to bed while these questions were still swimming round in my brain. I didnât get much sleep.
